Amy Miller arrives in Maine with her family (her father is a pastor) in the summer of 1942, after he lost his pastorate in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for refusing to support allow recruiters to use his church as a recruiting station.Amy meets Vaughn Lehmann, who has Aspergers, limps because of a bout with polio as a teen, and is deaf. Because of his handicap, Vaughn is scorned by the village people, who relieve him retarded and dangerous. Amys love and compassion brings Vaughn out of his shell (hes a mountain recluse for part of the story) and enables him to become a productive citizen. THE RECLUSE also has elements of mystery and crime.
